Begin with one of the most productive wild salmon rivers in the world, bring in the oil and gas industry, have almost non-existent land use ordinances, squeeze in as many strip malls, car lots and big signs as you can manage - and what do you get?
SOLdotna!
Folks call this place Slow-dotna, but that's too cliché.
SOLdotna begins with S-O-L and you know that you're Shit Outta Luck in this town.

This is truly a week that will live on in... but can't Soldotna City do something interesting? Cemetery seems a little dull.
You are a sick individual! While it is sad Mr. Chumley choose to resign, and a great loss, Mr. Carey will do fine! He is a man of integrity and I am glad I voted for him.
The last time Carey showed any integrity can't be enumerated or demonstrated.
But his incompetence, his dishonesty and his failures have been published regularly in the local papers since the beginning of his term as pretending to be mayor.
Being an apologist for Carey, and denying reality all along the way in order to attempt to do so, can and should be defined as a sort of sickness.
One could call it ' Loon flu'...

I heard it, Scooter is a Saint. Is the used tree salesman going to fill his shoes? How about a former preacher / SOL Mayor that has recently been wooing our current distinguished Mayor?
Will the new Scooter get a $20k raise on the first day, after all we get what we pay for don't we? Anyone who wants this job must only need 18 months of employment or they should have their head examined.
Inquiring minds want to know.
Anonymous 9:48 PM;
I do not think I can bear up, waiting for this new appointment.
Please soul, we need more on Chumley and something on the salary reductions!
You want more on Chumley.... How about this... He is one of the most honest people you will ever meet! He has been around forever and has done nothing, but good for the community! How is that? Or do you want the press to print something negative about Chumley? Good luck! He is an outstanding citizen and I appreciated his service in the bourough! I am sure he has bigger opportunities awaiting for him!
one anonymous post claiming chumley is a saint has no weight when weighed against the record and the many others who tell a much different story.
The record is clear, the functioning body which performs the oversight function of the borough government found Chumley guilty of failing to declare conflict of interest.
According to several other sources, this isn't the first time, in fact, when Chumley attempted to give back the money, he gave more money back at the same time, demonstrating that even Chumley admitted it wasn't the single instance.
One anonymous voice crying out claiming that Chumley is a saint isn't going to sway the reality.
The public lost trust in Chumley and Carey, their excuses and attempts to ignore or dismiss the error proved they deserve the distrust they earned.
Chumley is gone, and Carey will follow.
We can only hope Carey is next. His is such a little person everyone gets the blame for all his short commings. Wish the assembly would quit taking is crap and make him stand up for his on faults.
Last week Carey, et. al. and the
2ATF'ers (Norm Olson, Bob Bird...) did the meet and greet with Bill Walker and showed him (Walker) what a bunch of yelling and table pounding freaks that the Peninsula has to offer for a public gathering.
I am still in awe of Scott Walden for having the heart to say what so many employees think. I do not think Chumley is evil or conniving, I just think he is in over his head and finally had the smarts to realize he doesn't need the daily hassle or political ego boost. I think this mayor has been in over his head from day one but has neither the intelligence, humility nor self-confidence (much less correct grammar) to admit it. His administration has undermined a Borough employee base that has always done more with less than any other Borough or State agency in Alaska. We are the envy of the State. The mayor says all the right words but they are shallow and hollow. 20 more months, more or less....let the damage continue.
One annoymous remark???? I believe several people feel the same about Chumley! That being he is an honest man! Maybe you can't read or maybee the owner of this blog refuses to publish them! Afterall this his liberal hog wosh!
Good grief, how could the Borough become such a mess in such a short time?! Bring back John Williams. Yes, he can be a horse's ass at times, but at least he knows what he's doing and can certainly come in with a strong hand and straighten this mess out. (And he doesn't sleep with the staff.)
Bring Willians back?!? You have got to be kidding me! Williams was the worst mayor ever and everybody knows it! We all know Williams loves to go on and make comments about Carey/Chumley.... The only person who would ever post bring Willians back is Williams himself! He is his only fan!

I know lots of folks who think John Williams did a good job with the City of Kenai and the Borough over many years.
Who would you put forward as a competent candidate? How about offering up your top three candidates for the next election for discussion here?
Top three canidates... Good question! I will give it done thought and get back with you, however I can tell you two canidates that should NOT be elected.... JOHN WILLIAMS and TIM NAVARRE! Those two are evil, backstabbing, and liars!!!
This isn't a discussion of who isn't in office any longer, nor is it a forum for picking your dream candidate as if we don't have a dishonest, incompetent elected official right in front of us now.
Carey was the dream candidate, according to his supporters, and that false image never made it past his first days in office.
The lesson here is that Carey and his cronies don't match the image attempted to be created for them, so their supporters should be the last people to ask for suggestions of who might be qualified to replace them.
Carey and his cronies have done the damage they have because their supporters are every bit as incompetent and dishonest as they are.
If any of you continue to support, or even at one time thought to have supported Carey and his cronies, stay the heck out of the election process until you've learned to grow out of your fantasyland and taken the steps to gain at least some basic perspective on reality. Your fundamental incompetence was and is a factor in the damage, fixing that damage isn't going to be accomplished with more input from the incompetents who abetted the damage.
OK - I have two people that come immediately to mind for the next borough mayor.
1)Ron Long - the former assembly member from Seward. He's smart, does his homework, has a sense of humor, not much of an ego.
2)Larry Semmens, the Soldotna City manager. He's efficient and competent, no drama, his heart's in the right place, and he's a nice guy. I suspect his politics are a bit different than mine, but I think he can keep politics out of the way of making good decisions. Voting in a manager for mayor can fulfill two needs.
Interesting choices, Souldotna -- I like them!
Carey was voted in by almost 70% of the voters! Carey/Chumley have cleaned up a lot of mess in the bourough and more needs to be done! So, Carey and his cronnies have my respect! The borough IS a better place because of some of the clean up they did! Those in the bourough know this!!! When you go in and clean house you are going to have enemies, but the clean up NEEDS to continue... Afterall, it is the taxpayer's money going to waste for the nonsense that has been allowed to go on at the bourough! Carey has tried to lower property taxes, tried to eliminate SOME of the unneeded positions, and has worked very hard keeping the taxpayers informed what is going on in the bourough! So, in spite if the negative comments by some, Carey does have a LOT of supporters!
Ok I had time to think and I have 1 canidate in mind for the next election... How about Fred Sturman!!!! I have 2 more in mind, however I do not think these will matter because Mayor Carey will be re-elected! I say by 60% what do you folks say?
Ron Long ?
Larry Semmens ?
You might be more deluded than Carey's one single thoroughly deluded apologist.
The both of you show about as little sense as the very small minority that voted Carey into office.
So many anon postings - but this is a reply to the last.
It must be way cool to be as god-like as you imagine yourself to be.
Clarify, man - why are Long and Semmens delusional options?
Just because you deign it so?
Carey was elected by some 65% of those who voted...but wasn't there only 20-25% voter turnout?
Not much to shout about.
Larry Semmens should not want the Boro mess when the City job pay and percs continue with raises and pension.
In looking for the exact numbers describing Carey's narrowly decided election, for the first time ever, one cannot access election results from past years.
You can see 09 results, but anything older is now unavailable.
Someone at the borough has 'redesigned' their web site and now you can get a form for a public records request, which will cost you, possibly quite dearly,
but they used to have that information easily accessible right on the website.
Now, it appears, it's kept behind the curtain.
and, souldotna, one needn't be god-like to make comments based upon a long history of practical, reasoned observations of simple socio-political realities.
Instead of allowing yourself to become so self-conscious that you end up peevishly demanding that others should jump to accord you your wishes and accede to your querulous demands, wouldn't it be simpler and more effective, besides making you look a bit more mature, if instead you actually had replied with some substantiation of why your choices weren't in any way short-sighted and ill-conceived ?
While we're on the subject of just who it is that might consider themselves to possess something akin to 'god-like' authority, perhaps you'd like to quit censoring comments at your whim ?
Anon. - It's curious that you continue to lay into me for simply asking you to put some substance behind your rants.
So, one reader wonders who might be good candidates for borough mayor.I offer two suggestions and give some reasons they might be good.
You respond that I'm delusional - but offer nothing to back it up. You have no suggestions for other possible candidates.
I ask you to quit your posturing and offer substance. You respond by calling me immature. Insults and shallowness are tools of Limbaugh, Beck and Palin.
There's no point to vacuity.
If you want a debate - fine. But it's inane to argue with hot air.
Ok I had time to think and I have 1 canidate in mind for the next election... How about Fred Sturman!!!! I have 2 more in mind, however I do not think these will matter because Mayor Carey will be re-elected! I say by 60% what do you folks say?
-----
Well, why do you think Fred Sturman would be a good mayor? Souldotna has said in a previous blog post that Sturman would eliminate most Borough services as mayor -- do you agree with that assessment? Also, who are your other two candidates and why? Please share...
